Africa’s problem caused by leadership failure – Goodluck Jonathan

Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has identified the primary cause of conflicts across Africa as the struggle for power.

He highlighted that leadership contests are at the heart of many of the continent’s disputes.

Speaking at an event organized by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) in Abuja, in honor of the International Day of Peace, Jonathan expressed concern about Nigeria’s situation, stating that without fostering a culture of peace, political conflicts will continue.

Jonathan dismissed the belief that politics is inherently corrupt, blaming individuals who perpetuate negative practices for this perception.

He emphasized the need for a mindset shift towards peaceful leadership and elections. Citing the recent governorship election in Edo State, he warned that technology alone cannot solve electoral challenges, as corrupt minds can still exploit it.

Also present, Dr. Samuel Iroye, Head of Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Open University of Nigeria, supported Jonathan’s view, stressing the importance of youth engagement and equal access to education in fostering peace.

Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, IPCR’s Director General, urged for more investment in peacebuilding, noting that peace requires deliberate action.

In recognition of his commitment to peace, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was honored as a Fellow of IPCR during the event.

His message reinforced the need for Africa to address its political failures, corruption, and governance challenges in order to achieve lasting peace.
