In a stunning Champions League upset, Lille secured a 1-0 victory over reigning champions Real Madrid, courtesy of a first-half penalty by Jonathan David.

The result on Wednesday night ended Real Madrid’s remarkable 36-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

David, who had two promising chances in the 25th minute, was twice denied by Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, with the second save being particularly impressive. However, in first-half stoppage time, the Canadian striker made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending Lunin the wrong way.

The penalty was awarded after a VAR review determined that Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick struck the hand of Eduardo Camavinga.

Despite the introduction of Kylian Mbappe just before the hour mark, Real Madrid failed to find a response. This defeat marks their first Champions League loss since their semi-final clash against Manchester City in May 2023.

Lille’s win, combined with their earlier defeat, leaves them in 18th place in the group, while Real Madrid, with just three points from two games, sits in 17th.
