Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the intensifying political rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement signed by her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, on Tuesday, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed concern over the threat the conflict poses to the security of the South-South region and the nation at large.

She urged President Tinubu to take decisive action to de-escalate tensions, stressing the need for the FCT Minister to focus on his Abuja duties, allowing Governor Fubara to govern Rivers State in line with constitutional provisions.

The Senator highlighted the violent nature of the ongoing feud, which has been marred by intimidation, electoral malpractice allegations, and unrest, warning that failure to intervene could result in further destabilization. She emphasized the importance of ensuring peace and justice through presidential intervention to protect lives, property, and the integrity of state institutions.

“The situation in Rivers demands urgent attention, and I implore Mr. President to take decisive action to prevent further escalation,” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.

“We cannot afford to watch as the crisis deepens, threatening the stability of the region. President Tinubu’s leadership is crucial in resolving this impasse.

“If left unchecked, the crisis may undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress, embolden perpetrators of violence and electoral malpractices, and pose a serious threat to national security and stability.”
