Born on June 22, 1962, in Fagge, Kano State, Ata began his education early, undertaking Quranic studies at the age of three.

He attended Fagge Primary School from 1968 to 1975 and continued his secondary education at Aminu Kano Community Commercial College (formerly known as Aminu Kano Commercial College), where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE ‘O’ Level) in 1980.

Ata pursued higher education at Bayero University, Kano, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1984.

He completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Sokoto State in 1985, marking the start of his teaching career. His dedication to learning led him to attain a Master’s degree in Development Studies from Bayero University, Kano, in 2001.

Career

Ata began his professional journey as a classroom teacher before transitioning to the Kano State Ministry of Education in 1992, where he served as an Inspector of Business Education.

In 1997, he was appointed as a Principal Planning Officer at the Kano State Housing Corporation. He left the civil service in 1998 to pursue a career in politics.

Political career

In the 1999 Nigerian General Election, Ata was elected to the Kano State House of Assembly, representing the Fagge constituency under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

After losing his seat in the 2003 elections, he made a comeback in 2011 and won re-election in 2015, during which he was appointed Majority Leader of the House.

On July 3, 2017, Ata became the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly following the resignation of Kabiru Alhassan Rurum amid misconduct allegations.

His tenure was marked by controversy, including multiple attempts at impeachment. Ultimately, he was removed from office on July 30, 2018, after a motion was supported by 27 out of 40 House members, leading to Rurum’s reinstatement.

Appointment

Ata sought re-election in the 2019 Nigerian General Election but was defeated by Tukur Muhammad of the PDP.

With his recent appointment as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, he aims to utilize his extensive experience to address housing challenges in Nigeria.
