In a sensational Champions League showdown, incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim orchestrated a memorable 4-1 win for Sporting Lisbon, handing Manchester City their third consecutive defeat for the first time since 2018.

The victory, Amorim’s last home game as Sporting manager, not only marks one of his finest moments with the club but also delivers City’s heaviest loss since September 2020.

Sporting’s hero of the night, Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres, rose to the occasion with a brilliant hat-trick.

After Phil Foden’s early goal for City, Gyokeres drove home a powerful equalizer in the 38th minute. Sporting’s momentum surged early in the second half as Maximiliano Araujo broke through to score, putting them ahead just seconds after the restart.

Gyokeres then capitalized on two penalty opportunities, calmly converting both to seal the win, with City star Erling Haaland missing a penalty that added to City’s woes.

Amorim’s Sporting exit is shaping up to be an emotional one. With seven consecutive wins across competitions, Lisbon fears the end of an era, though Amorim humorously remarked that this victory might see United fans prematurely likening him to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The rousing win, however, adds weight to the optimism surrounding Amorim’s move to Old Trafford, where Manchester United fans eagerly await the impact of their new boss.
