Meet Prof. Samson Duna, NBRRI’s new DG

Professor Samson Duna, a respected civil engineering expert, currently serves as the Director-General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI).

A distinguished academic and industry leader, Professor Duna hails from Billiri in Gombe State and is a registered engineer under the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Background

Prof. Samson Duna, born on March 13, 1968, in Katsina-Ala, Benue State, and hailing from Gombe State, is a distinguished civil engineering expert with a profound impact on both academia and industry.

With an academic journey that includes a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering (1991), a Master’s in 1998, and a Ph.D. in 2012, Prof. Duna’s contributions span the private and public sectors, as well as the educational field.

His journey reflects a strong commitment to advancing infrastructure solutions in Nigeria.

Professional journey

Professor Duna has built a robust teaching career at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi.

Over the years, he progressed from Assistant Lecturer and Graduate Assistant to Lecturer II and Lecturer I, before becoming a Senior Lecturer, Reader, and eventually, a Professor.

Professional affiliations

An active contributor to engineering bodies, Professor Duna is affiliated with several prestigious organizations.

He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Engineering Management (MNIEM), a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), a Fellow of the Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (FNAEGE), and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE).

Additionally, he serves as a Council Member of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), reflecting his influence on national engineering standards.

Leadership at NBRRI

Appointed as the Director-General of NBRRI in 2020, Professor Duna has led the institute with a vision for innovative infrastructure research.

His tenure has recently been extended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, securing him another four-year term to drive impactful engineering research and advancements across Nigeria’s building and road sectors.

Recognitions

He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Merit Award from the Student Union Government of ATBU (2013), the Award of Excellence from Gombe State Students Association (2013), and the Award of Academic Excellence from the ATBU Alumni Association (2017), among others.
