CAF WCL: Edo Queens lose third place spot in penalty shootout

Edo Queens narrowly missed a podium finish in the CAF Women’s Champions League after suffering a 4-3 loss to Egypt’s FC Masar in a penalty shootout during the third-place classification match.  

The Nigerian champions dominated the game, creating numerous chances but failing to find the back of the net in regular time.

The match ended in a goalless draw, pushing the contest into penalties where FC Masar emerged victorious.

For the critical encounter, Coach Moses Aduku made three key changes to the starting lineup, introducing Blessing Illiveida, Mary Mamudu, and Esther Inyang.

The team adopted an aggressive high-pressing strategy, controlling possession and dictating the tempo, but their inability to convert opportunities ultimately cost them the match.

Edo Queens’ impressive run in the competition ends on a bittersweet note, as they leave with valuable experience despite narrowly missing out on a medal.

The match was characterised by Edo Queens’ aggressive approach, which frequently disrupted FC Masar’s attempts to play out from the back. However, the Nigerian side struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities despite their territorial dominance.

In the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, FC Masar emerged victorious 4-3, clinching the bronze medal and leaving Edo Queens to settle for fourth place.

The result meant Edo Queens earned $300,000 in prize money, while FC Masar collected $350,000. Both teams were making their debut in the prestigious continental competition.
