Sanwo-Olu signs Lagos Electricity Bill into Law, targets 24-hour power supply

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, marking a significant milestone in the state’s push for reliable power supply and economic growth.

The law, signed on Tuesday at Lagos House, Ikeja, aims to tackle challenges in the energy sector and reduce Lagos’s reliance on the national grid. According to Gboyega Akosile, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the bill aligns with the Federal Government’s 2023 approval allowing states to generate and distribute power independently.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the new law would pave the way for a 24-hour electricity supply across Lagos, transforming it into a global city with a stable power infrastructure.

In November, Lagos invited independent power producers to submit bids for gas-fired power plants under the Clean Lagos Electricity Market initiative. This project, led by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Office of Public-Private Partnerships, aims to close the state’s electricity gap and boost industrial growth.

The signing underscores Lagos’s commitment to becoming a self-sufficient energy hub, fostering development and improving residents’ quality of life.
