Kwara community seek justice for suspect allegedly tortured to death by police
Residents of the Erubu-Asunnara community in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State have called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to investigate the mysterious death of Jimoh Tunji Abdulqodir, a community member who allegedly died in police custody under controversial circumstances.
Jimoh, a poultry farm worker, was arrested on Friday, December 20, 2024, over a ₦220,000 debt owed to his colleague, Mr. Peter. According to reports, he was in good health before being taken into custody. However, his family was later informed by the police that Jimoh had died by suicide in his cell early Saturday morning.
In a statement signed by the community’s Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim O. Mujeeb, and Secretary, Comrade Hassan Taiye Erubu, residents described the circumstances surrounding Jimoh’s death as “bizarre and unacceptable.” They alleged that the cell was too cramped to facilitate a hanging and pointed out that no rope was found, making the police’s account questionable.
Jimoh’s family recounted how he had been in good spirits before his arrest, washing clothes and interacting with neighbors. Following a call from his creditor, he was lured out of his home and subsequently detained. The family was initially denied access to him at the police station and later informed he had died by suicide.
The community has demanded an independent investigation into the incident, urging the IGP, Kwara State Commissioner of Police, and human rights organizations to intervene. They insist that those responsible for Jimoh’s death be held accountable.
The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Spokesperson Ejire Adeyemi Adetoun stated that an investigation had been launched to uncover the truth and assured the public of transparency in the case.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
