Robert Lewandowski’s double strike secured a 2-1 victory for Barcelona against Valencia in their La Liga season opener on Saturday.

The Polish forward’s goals marked a successful start for Hansi Flick, who celebrated his first competitive match as Barcelona’s head coach with a hard-fought win at the Mestalla stadium.

Despite a strong start by Valencia, who took the lead just before halftime through Hugo Duro’s header, Lewandowski responded swiftly for Barca.

He equalized in stoppage time of the first half, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Alejandro Balde, which was cleverly redirected into his path by Lamine Yamal.

The 17-year-old Yamal, fresh off his Euro 2024 star turn, started the match despite personal turmoil earlier in the week.

The match remained tightly contested, but Barcelona took control shortly after the break. A penalty awarded to the Catalan side following a foul on Raphinha by Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera was confidently converted by Lewandowski.

His spot-kick, blasted into the top corner, was enough to secure the three points for Barca.

Barcelona’s lineup featured a blend of youth and experience, with three 17-year-olds, including Marc Bernal on his debut, starting the match.

Despite the absence of key players like Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo, Barcelona’s young squad delivered under Flick’s leadership.

The victory sets the tone for Barcelona’s title challenge, especially with reigning champions Real Madrid set to play their opening match with new signing Kylian Mbappé on Sunday.

As Flick’s team continues to integrate new players and adapt to his tactical approach, this gritty win serves as a promising beginning.

Barcelona kept Valencia at arm’s length for most of the second half, ensuring the pace of the game was slow.

The Catalans had the better chances to score again with Ferran Torres sending a weak effort straight at Mamardashvili when through, while midfielder Marc Casado fired wide when well placed late on.

Lewandowski had a chance to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time but rifled over the bar.
