Strike: FG to meet ASUU Monday

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government are scheduled to meet on Monday in a move to address the university teachers’ demands and prevent an impending strike.

This meeting follows ASUU’s 21-day strike notice issued to the government on Wednesday.

The union has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to resolve the lingering issues hindering the progress of Nigerian universities.

The strike notice was announced by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, during a press conference at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

In a bid to stop the looming strike, the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman said government officials will be meeting with ASUU leadership on Monday.

The Minister announced this on Thursday when he appeared on Beyond 100 days programme aired on TVC on Thursday.

“We have already sent out notice to the leadership of ASUU for us to meet on Monday.

“On Wednesday, we (government side) reviewed the letter submitted by ASUU and all the issues which are listed in the letter. It is our hope that by Monday we will meet to discuss them.

“Some of the issues are historic in nature; when you talk about the 2009 agreement. This is something that dates back to almost 1981 when they started.

“We have been having a series of conversations with the leadership of ASUU on the issues affecting the university system so that we can, together, address all their concerns”, he said.
