BREAKING: Court of Appeal overturns High Court ruling on Edo PDP primary election

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned a Federal High Court ruling that had previously mandated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to allow 381 ad-hoc delegates to participate in its February 22 primary election in Edo State.

This primary had resulted in Asue Ighodalo being chosen as the PDP candidate for the upcoming governorship election on September 21, 2024.

The three-member panel of the appellate court set aside the July 4, 2024, judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, stating that the trial court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case brought by the aggrieved delegates. The Court of Appeal ruled that the delegates did not possess the necessary legal rights to initiate the suit.

The unanimous decision of the appellate court also emphasized that it would not interfere with the PDP’s internal processes for selecting its candidate, affirming the party’s autonomy in such matters.
