Amorim eager to retain Rashford amid exit rumors
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to retain Marcus Rashford amid growing speculation about the forward’s future at Old Trafford.
Rashford, 27, hinted at seeking a “new challenge” in an interview with British journalist Henry Winter, sparking rumors of an imminent exit.
The local hero, who has been with United since his youth and boasts an impressive 138 goals in 426 appearances since his 2016 debut, has faced a difficult 18 months.
His dip in form saw him lose his place in England’s squad for the Euros and, most recently, left out of United’s squad for last weekend’s Manchester derby.
Amorim’s decision to omit Rashford from the clash against Manchester City coincided with the forward’s candid social media remarks about ending his two-decade association with the club.
Addressing the situation during a press conference ahead of United’s League Cup quarter-final against Tottenham, Amorim stated his commitment to keeping Rashford as part of his plans, signaling his importance to the team despite recent struggles.
The manager’s comments reflect United’s hope to navigate this critical juncture while ensuring Rashford’s continued contribution to the club. Fans now await further clarity on the forward’s future as the season progresses.
“No (I’ve not spoken to him),” Amorim said. “Not yet. It was yesterday (when) I gave the day off to the lads, so he’s our player and he’s ready for the next game.”
Asked if he would be happy to retain Rashford in his squad, the recently-arrived Amorim replied: “Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents and he’s a big talent.
“So, he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus.”
Amorim added the “new challenge” Rashford spoke of could be found at Old Trafford in trying to revive the fortunes of United, once the dominant force in English football, but now a lowly 13th in the Premier League.
“We have here a new challenge, it’s a tough one,” he said.
“For me, it’s the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“So, this is a really new challenge and the biggest one. I hope all my players are ready for this new challenge.”
