A 35-year-old man, identified as Ismaila, narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob on Wednesday in the Okumagba area of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, after allegedly stealing a keyboard from a local church.

The mob, infuriated by the alleged theft, subjected Ismaila to a brutal beating, leaving his head bruised and his body severely injured.

In a humiliating spectacle, they forced a motor tyre around his neck and paraded him through Willie Street to Okumagba Avenue.

The situation escalated as the mob prepared to set the suspect ablaze. However, mobile policemen arrived in time to rescue him.

The officers took Ismaila to the Police “B” Division, assuring bystanders that he would be interrogated to reveal his alleged accomplices.

The angry mob who were becoming restive expressed disappointment over the presence of the policemen and blamed their delay in setting ablaze the suspect on serving as a deterrent to others.

As at the time of filing this report, the suspect had been wicked away by the police.

This incident underscores the dangers of mob justice, which often bypasses the legal system and endangers lives. Authorities have yet to confirm further details about the suspect or his alleged involvement in the theft.
