Argentina beats Colombia to win record 16th Copa America title

Argentina won their 16th Copa America title with a stunning 1-0 victory over Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time goal sealed the victory, his fifth of the tournament and the culmination of a tense night on and off the pitch.

The match, marred by security and crowd issues that caused an 82-minute delay, saw little fluid play but was decided by a moment of brilliance from Martinez. The victory adds to Argentina’s recent success, following their 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup triumphs.

The win was bittersweet as Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, was forced off the field with an injury in the 66th minute, visibly distraught as he watched the remainder of the game from the bench. Additionally, Angel Di Maria played his final game for the national team, adding an emotional layer to the celebrations.

Colombia, whose only Copa America title came in 2001, faced a disappointing night. Nestor Lorenzo’s side struggled to find their rhythm, with early opportunities failing to yield results. Jhon Corboba’s speculative shot hit the post in the seventh minute, and Jefferson Lerma’s long-range effort in the 33rd minute was saved by Argentine keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Security issues outside the stadium caused chaos, with fans blaming poor organization for the delays. Some supporters needed medical attention for heat exhaustion, but the situation was eventually resolved when gates were opened without checks, allowing the game to proceed.

On the field, both teams had chances. Di Maria connected with Messi in the 20th minute, but Colombia’s keeper Camilo Vargas saved Messi’s shot. Later, Messi’s free-kick found Nicolas Tagliafico, whose header went just wide. Colombia’s Davinson Sanchez missed a close-range header from a corner, and Di Maria’s run forced another save from Vargas.

The turning point came when Messi went down injured in the 66th minute, leading to his substitution and emotional exit. Argentina thought they had a winner in the 75th minute, but Nicolas Gonzalez’s effort was ruled offside.

In extra-time, the game was decided by a moment of quality. Leandro Paredes won the ball in midfield, passed to Giovani Lo Celso, who set up Martinez for a confident finish, securing Argentina’s historic victory.
