Background

Bala Mohammed was born on October 5, 1958 in Duguri Town, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

He received his First School Leaving Certificate at Duguri Primary School in Bauchi from 1965 to 1971.

From 1972 to 1976, he attended Government Secondary School in Bauchi.

After completing his Advanced Level Certificate at the North East College of Art and Science in 1977 to 1979, he was accepted to the University of Maiduguri in 1979, where he earned a BA in English language in 1982.

In 1988, he also enrolled in a general management course at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

He got a certificate from the Institute of Purchase & Supplies after attending a capacity building course in Lagos in 1997.

Personal Life

Governor Bala Mohammed is a Muslim who is married to Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, the couple has two kids together.

Career

He started out as a journalist and worked his way up to become the News Editor of the Mirage Newspaper in Jos between 1982 and 1983.

He also worked for the News Agency of Nigeria for a while as a news reporter (NAN).
In 1983 and 1984, he switched to the Democrat Newspaper, where he served as the state editor responsible for Benue.

As an Administrative Officer in the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, Abuja, he left journalism in 1984 to enter the civil service.

He was elevated to the rank of Principal Administrative Officer and reassigned to the Cabinet Secretariat of the Presidency in 1994.

He served as Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals’ Chief Supplies Officer from 1995 to 1997.

In the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel, he was elevated to the position of Assistant Director in 1997.

He served in that capacity until 1999, when he was elevated from Deputy Director/SA to Hon. Minister for the years 1999–2003.

He was appointed Director of Administration at Nigerian Railway Corporations in 2003, and then the Minister of Aviation designated him as Special Assistant.

He was appointed Director of Supplies and Administration at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency in January.

Politics

He was a senator for the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) from 2007 until 2010, when he was appointed FCT Minister.

He had previously won the South Senatorial seat in Bauchi State.
Serving in various house committees, he developed into one of Nigeria’s most vocal lawmakers while in the senate chamber.

He served as Secretary of the Northern Senator’s Forum and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation.

The committees included Communication, Finance, Public Account, Rules and Business, Environment, Labor and Productivity.

He joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the death of President Umaru Yar’ Adua, and he eventually became a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan.

On May 29, 2019, Senator Bala Mohammed, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, took the oath of office as the governor of Bauchi State.

He had defeated his opponent, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, by a margin of 515,313 votes to 500,625 votes. On January 20, 2020, the Supreme Court upheld the victory.

Awards

In 2021, Nigerian News named Governor of the Year for Infrastructure.

In 2021, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) awarded an Honorary Fellowship.

Best Pilgrim Governor in the Northeast Region by Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission in 2013.
