BREAKING: Supreme Court affirms Hope Uzodimma’s re-election as Imo State Governor

In a pivotal ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the re-election of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, affirming his victory in the November 11, 2023, governorship election.

A five-member panel of the apex court, with Justice Mohammed Idris delivering the lead judgment, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, declaring the case devoid of merit.

Justice Idris meticulously addressed all the issues presented in the appeal, ruling in favor of Uzodimma.

Similarly, the court rejected the appeal from the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, describing it as unmeritorious.

Justice Idris stated that the appellants failed to substantiate their claims of election irregularities adequately.

This ruling effectively reinforces the previous decisions of both the Court of Appeal and the Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had dismissed the petitions from the PDP, LP, and other parties challenging Uzodimma’s victory.

On July 16, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had already dismissed the PDP’s appeal, affirming Uzodimma’s election as governor.

The Labour Party’s appeal, along with a similar appeal by the Allied Peoples Movement, was also dismissed, with the court finding no merit in the allegations of electoral irregularities and forgery of Governor Uzodimma’s West African Examination Certificate (WAEC).

These consistent judicial rulings solidify Hope Uzodimma’s position as the rightful governor of Imo State.
