BREAKING: Violent clash between Police, Shi’ites in Abuja leaves two officers dead

A violent clash between the Nigerian police and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, occurred in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two police operatives.

The confrontation, which took place during the Arbaeen Symbolic Trek in Abuja, also left three officers hospitalized and unconscious due to injuries sustained in the violence.

The incident began when armed police officers reportedly fired teargas and live ammunition at IMN members who were participating in the Arbaeen Trek, a religious procession commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS).

The clash escalated at Wuse Market, leading to widespread commotion as people fled the scene. An unspecified number of IMN members were reported killed, though exact figures could not be independently verified at the time.

In response to the incident, Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara Sokoto, a representative of the IMN, condemned the police’s actions and reported that those injured had been taken to the hospital. He also mentioned that details of the casualties would be provided to the press later.

However, the FCT police command provided a different account of events. According to the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the IMN members launched an unprovoked attack on a police checkpoint, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives. This attack, according to the police, resulted in the deaths of two officers, injuries to three others, and the burning of three police patrol vehicles.

The situation has since been brought under control, and several arrests have been made. The police assured that further developments would be communicated as the investigation continues.
