Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari visited ex-military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), at his London residence on Saturday.

This visit highlights the long-standing relationship between the two influential statesmen, both of whom have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s political and military history.

Bashir Ahmad, Buhari’s former Special Assistant on Digital Communication, shared the news on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “Former President Muhammadu Buhari today paid a visit to former Head of State, elder statesman, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) at his residence in London, United Kingdom.”

Buhari, who frequently visited the UK during his presidency, including for medical reasons and official duties, is said to have made this visit as a sign of respect for Gowon, a revered figure in Nigeria’s unity and history.

Gowon, now in his late 80s, continues to play an active role in philanthropy and peace-building initiatives.
