Bundesliga: Mainz stun Bayern Munich as Leverkusen close gap at the top
Two goals from Jae-sung Lee propelled Mainz to a stunning 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich on Saturday, handing Bayern coach Vincent Kompany his first Bundesliga defeat.
The shock result sees Bayern’s lead at the top of the table reduced to just four points, following Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Augsburg.
Mainz capitalized on Bayern’s injury woes, with key players including Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Joao Palhinha unavailable. Without Kane’s influence, Bayern dominated possession but struggled to convert opportunities in the first half.
Mainz, who have a strong recent home record against Bayern, opened the scoring just before halftime. Lee pounced on a poor clearance from South Korean teammate Min-Jae Kim to fire the home side ahead.
Bayern’s struggles continued after the break, and Mainz doubled their lead through Lee again. Armindo Sieb’s clever cross set up Lee, who finished with a stunning strike on the turn.
Leroy Sane gave Bayern a glimmer of hope in the 87th minute, tapping in a deflected Joshua Kimmich shot, but Mainz held on for a famous win. The victory moves Mainz, who battled relegation last season, up to sixth in the league.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen extended their winning streak to seven matches with a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Augsburg. Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz scored for the defending champions, keeping them firmly in the title race.
Elsewhere, Borussia Moenchengladbach thrashed Holstein Kiel 4-1, with Alassane Plea scoring twice and further goals from Robin Hack and Tim Kleindienst. Gladbach have now lost just once in their last eight games, while newly-promoted Kiel remain second to last.
The Bundesliga weekend continues with St Pauli hosting Werder Bremen on Saturday night, while Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart, and RB Leipzig are set to feature in Sunday’s fixtures.
