Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation, ending his nearly ten-year tenure as the nation’s leader.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ottawa on Monday, Trudeau revealed his intention to step down as both Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party once a new leader is selected to replace him.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” he stated, addressing mounting political pressure and internal challenges within his administration. In recent weeks, prominent members of the Liberal Party had called for Trudeau’s resignation amid growing discontent.

Trudeau, who first assumed office in 2015, led Canada through pivotal moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic and significant trade negotiations. His leadership also saw advancements in climate policy and the legalization of cannabis, but his administration faced criticism over handling certain domestic and ethical issues.

More to come.
