Controversial banner with ‘Jesus Is Not God’ inscription at Lekki Mosque sparks outrage online
A banner displayed at the entrance of Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State has stirred mixed reactions across social media platforms.
The banner, which gained attention on Wednesday, featured the statement: “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!” This message has drawn widespread criticism, with many labeling it as blasphemous and disrespectful to Christian beliefs.
Several social media users expressed outrage, describing the inscription as offensive and inflammatory, while others argued for mutual respect in interfaith dialogues.
However, a minority defended the statement, claiming that similar theological assertions have been made by religious leaders in the past.
Nigerian actress Wumi Tuase also expressed her discomfort with the banner, sharing her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter): “I don’t like to get into religious conversations but I found it very weird that Lekki
Central Mosque has this in front of their gate.”
A tweep @Dannymasterp wrote, “Jesus is not God of course the evidence is very clear, Is just that the church specializes in celebrating his personality more than his teachings, They call him God because he does miracles without knowing that was a way of making people believe he was sent by God.”
@shinoremy wrote, “The issue with the banner isn’t whether it is true or not. However, it is aimed at countering a religious doctrine, and coming from a religion like Islam could possibly incite religious conflicts. We need to do better as a people and just respect ourselves.”
An influencer @GuyMr0 said, “That’s the hard truth. Jesus Christ is not God. He’s a Messenger of God. If Jesus Christ is God, then who was God before Jesus Christ was born?”
@Haceboiy wrote, “So what bad about that? or is Jesus God? NO” so the mosque was very right as to remind the novice who know not about the scriptures but following pastors teachings & churches doctrine to realize their senses that Jesus is a son of man who came from Jerusalem in the Middle East.”
@Mrmara0110 noted, “My question is… What’s the reason behind them mounting the banner with such write-up.. What’s their reason for putting that banner?”
