Tatyana Tomashova, a former Russian athlete, has been stripped of her 2012 Olympic silver medal in the 1500m event due to a doping violation, as announced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old was penalized following the reanalysis of two out-of-competition tests from June 21 and July 17, 2012, which detected anabolic steroids in her system.

In addition to losing her medal, Tomashova has been handed a 10-year ban. This sanction follows a previous two-year suspension she served in 2008 for a similar offense.

The two-time world champion originally finished fourth in the 1500m final in the London Olympics 12 years ago, but had been upgraded to silver after Turks Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut had their medals stripped for doping.

Bahrain’s Maryam Yusuf Jamal won the gold medal, despite crossing the line third behind Cakir Alptekin and Bulut.
