ECOWAS backs Nigeria, others amid allegations from Niger Republic
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed strong support for Nigeria and other member states accused by Niger Republic of sponsoring terrorism and colluding with France to destabilize the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS dismissed the accusations as “unfounded,” reaffirming Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and security.
“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) expresses deep concern over allegations being made against Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states. The Commission stands firmly by Nigeria and ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism,” the statement read.
It praised Nigeria’s leadership within the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and its efforts to counter terrorism in the region. “The recent successes recorded by the MNJTF, which Nigeria leads, demonstrate the country’s commitment to peace and security across the region,” the statement added.
ECOWAS called for restraint and dialogue, urging regional players to avoid making baseless accusations.
The Federal Government of Nigeria also responded to the claims, with Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris categorically denying Niger’s allegations.
“These claims exist solely in the realm of imagination. Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance, overt or covert, with France or any other country to destabilize Niger Republic,” Idris said in a statement.
The minister emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to fostering stability and maintaining diplomatic ties, dismissing the accusations as baseless.
