EPL: Arsenal title hope stalls with 1-1 draw against Brighton
Arsenal’s hopes of closing the gap in the Premier League title race took a hit as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton, courtesy of Joao Pedro’s second-half penalty.
The Gunners took the lead in the 16th minute through 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who was making just his second Premier League start.
Combining skillfully with Mikel Merino and Declan Rice, Nwaneri unleashed a shot that slipped past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and nestled in the far corner.
Arsenal maintained dominance throughout the first half, creating opportunities to extend their advantage but failing to capitalize.
Brighton found their way back into the match in the 63rd minute through a controversial penalty decision.
Joao Pedro flicked the ball into the air, and William Saliba, attempting to head it away, made contact with Pedro’s head.
The Brazilian went to ground, and after a VAR review, the penalty was upheld. Pedro converted confidently, sending Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya the wrong way.
Brighton substitute Yankuba Minteh came close to sealing victory for the hosts late in the match but curled his shot wide from a promising position inside the area.
The draw leaves Arsenal trailing league leaders Liverpool by five points, having played two games more. With Liverpool set to face Manchester United, Arsenal’s chances of closing the gap in the title race grow slimmer.
This result underscores Arsenal’s inability to capitalize on key moments, leaving them with ground to cover as the season progresses.
