Flamingos fall to Ghana in penalty shootout at WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup Final
Nigeria’s Flamingos put up a spirited performance but suffered a heartbreaking loss to hosts Ghana in the final of the maiden WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup on Sunday.
After a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time, the Flamingos fell 5-4 in a penalty shootout, settling for second place in the tournament.
Ghana started strongly, taking the lead in the 13th minute through Gertrude Amoafa before Priscilla Mensah doubled the advantage just five minutes later.
Nigeria responded in the 34th minute when Precious Oscar pulled one back, ending the first half at 2-1.
The Flamingos continued to push in the second half, but a potential equalizer in the 66th minute was disallowed. Moments later, a powerful effort struck the crossbar, denying them again.
Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when Harmony Chidi scored the equalizer, forcing the game into a penalty shootout.
Despite their resilience, Ghana edged out Nigeria in the shootout to claim the inaugural WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup title.
