From academia to leadership: Meet Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female Vice President
Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made history on January 7, 2025, when she was sworn in as Ghana’s first female Vice President.

Early Life
Born on November 22, 1951, in Komenda in the Central Region of Ghana, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang excelled in education from an early age.
Academic background
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and went on to obtain a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature from York University in Canada.
Her career in academia began at UCC, where she rose through the ranks to become the university’s first female Vice-Chancellor in 2008.
Her leadership was marked by significant contributions to research, institutional development, and gender equality.
Political journey
In 2013, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang transitioned into politics when she was appointed Minister of Education under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
