German Super Cup to bear Beckenbauer’s name

The German Football League (DFL) announced on Friday that starting in 2025, the German Super Cup will be named after Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away earlier this year.

Beckenbauer, known as ‘Der Kaiser’ for his commanding presence on the field, was one of football’s greatest players.

He won the Bundesliga five times and the German Cup four times during his illustrious career. Beckenbauer died in January at the age of 78.

“The annual duel between the German champion and the German Cup winner will in future be called the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup,” said the DFL in a statement.

The 2025/26 edition of the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup will take place on August 16, 2025.
