Ghana misses out on AFCON 2025 after draw with Angola

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco were dashed after a 1-1 draw against Angola on Friday.

The result ends a streak of continuous AFCON appearances dating back to 2006, marking a major disappointment for the Black Stars.

Jordan Ayew provided an early spark for Ghana, delivering a brilliant free kick in the 18th minute that left Angola’s goalkeeper helpless.

Ayew’s goal offered a glimmer of hope in what has been a challenging campaign for the Black Stars.

Ghana maintained control in the first half, thanks in part to goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen, who made a crucial penalty save to keep the slim advantage intact at halftime.

However, Angola’s persistence paid off in the second half when substitute Zini, left unmarked in the box, headed in the equalizer. This critical goal sealed Angola’s qualification for Morocco 2025 and extinguished Ghana’s chances.

This failure marks Ghana’s first absence from AFCON since 2004, highlighting the end of a nearly two-decade streak of consistent participation.

Meanwhile, Angola’s qualification adds to their achievements, and Sudan remains in a favorable position to join them if they earn at least a point in their final game.

Niger also retains an outside chance, depending on their result against Ghana and Sudan’s outcome.

Ghana will end their disappointing campaign on Monday with a home game against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, where they will look to restore some pride in front of their fans.
