In a move to honor the legendary highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has announced the renaming of a popular road in Enugu after the iconic singer.

The road, formerly known as Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu East Council Area, will now be called Mike Ejeagha Road.

Governor Mbah made this announcement during his recent visit to Ejeagha’s residence, where he praised the musician for his unparalleled contributions to the cultural and musical landscape of Nigeria. Ejeagha, fondly known as the “Gwo Gwon Ngwo” singer, has been celebrated for his unique ability to infuse traditional Igbo proverbs and wisdom into his music, making him a beloved figure in the region and beyond.

The newly renamed road is located in the heart of Enugu, symbolizing Ejeagha’s lasting impact on the community. Governor Mbah stated that the decision to rename the road was part of his administration’s broader effort to recognize and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Enugu State.

The announcement has been met with widespread approval from the public, particularly among fans of Ejeagha’s music. Many have lauded the governor for his commitment to honoring those who have made significant contributions to the state’s identity and history.

This renaming is seen as a fitting tribute to a man whose music has touched the hearts of many and continues to resonate with people across generations.

The governor wrote on his official x.com handle;

“It was a pleasure to visit our living legend, Mike Ejeagha, and to commission four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike. In recognition of Mike Ejeagha’s immense contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu State, we have renamed Obinagu Road, leading to his residence and reconstructed earlier in the year, to Mike Ejeagha Road.

Enugu is a state rich in history, talent, and culture. It is our duty to honour and celebrate those who have shaped our identity. Today, our government extends full support to Mike Ejeagha, taking responsibility for his upkeep as part of our commitment to preserving the legacies of our indigenous legends.

To the residents of Abakpa and Enugu State, we assure you that this is just the beginning. We have recently awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads and 20 rural roads, and Abakpa is certainly included.

Very soon, we will commence the dualisation of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, extending all the way to Opi-Nsukka. The contract has been awarded, and work will commence shortly. Our commitment to transforming Enugu State is unwavering, with many more roads and projects underway to enhance the lives of our people.

Tomorrow Is Here!”
