Heavy fire ravages spare parts market in Ibadan, losses run into billions
A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, consuming the renowned spare parts market at Gate in Ibadan, Oyo State, and causing losses estimated in billions of naira.
The blaze, which began around midnight, continued to spread as firefighters and local residents worked relentlessly to contain it. The inferno has added to the sorrow in the city, following the recent stampede at Islamic High School that claimed over 30 lives.
Speaking to journalists, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services, Mr. Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident and described it as a massive tragedy. He urged private water tanker owners to assist in extinguishing the fire, as the firefighting team continues to battle the flames.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are expected to commence investigations once the situation is brought under control.
