‘I failed four years ago, today I succeeded’: Lookman’s inspiring speech after CAF win

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, an achievement that solidifies his position as Africa’s finest male footballer.

The 27-year-old triumphed over formidable competitors, including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, and Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy.

Lookman, visibly moved, delivered an emotional acceptance speech at the awards ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday.

Reflecting on his football journey, he revisited some of his most trying moments, including a missed penalty in November 2020 that brought widespread scrutiny.

During his Premier League spell at Fulham, Lookman attempted a Panenka-style penalty in stoppage time against West Ham.

The effort lacked power and precision, landing straight into the hands of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. Fulham suffered a 1-0 defeat, and Lookman endured significant backlash.

However, the winger’s remarkable resurgence in recent years has been a testament to his resilience and hard work. His stellar performances for club and country have now earned him continental recognition, as he joins the elite ranks of CAF award winners.

Lookman’s journey from disappointment to triumph stands as an inspiration to aspiring footballers across Africa.

The missed penalty drew mockery on social media and public criticism from then-Fulham manager Scott Parker.

“I’m disappointed and angry. You can’t take penalties like that, and he knows that. He’s a young player, and he’s learning,” Parker said after the game.

Reflecting on the incident on Monday, Lookman said, “Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, and I’m the best player in Africa.”

“I want to say to the young children and people watching this: don’t let your failures weigh you down to the point they break your wings. Matter of fact, turn your pain into your power and continue to fight.”

“Firstly, I want to thank the Almighty God for everything He has been doing in my life and for all His blessings.”

“I want to thank the president, all my teammates, both club and country and everyone who has supported me with love.”

“This award today is a blessing to me, my family, and my nation. To be recognised as the best player in Africa is something incredible,  and I’m extremely proud.”
