JUST-IN: Court denies suspended DCP Abba Kyari bail

In a recent decision, the Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

However, the court has agreed to an accelerated hearing for his case.

Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the matter, emphasized that granting bail is at the court’s discretion under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). He concluded that Kyari had not provided sufficient evidence to justify his release on bail.

Kyari is facing charges that could lead to a maximum sentence of 25 years, which significantly exceeds the two-year threshold for bail consideration under the ACJA.

It’s worth noting that on May 22, the court had granted Kyari a temporary two-week bail to attend his mother’s burial rites. This bail was extended by a week upon his request, allowing him to be released on June 1 after meeting the necessary conditions.

As the case proceeds, all eyes will be on the accelerated hearing to see how the legal process unfolds for the high-profile police officer.
