Legendary wrestler Rey Mysterio Sr. passes away at 68
Miguel Ángel López Días, famously known as Rey Mysterio Sr., the uncle and mentor of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, has passed away at the age of 68.
The news was confirmed by Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the Mexican wrestling company, through a heartfelt announcement.
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest,” the statement read.
Born in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1955, Rey Mysterio Sr. began his career as a boxer before transitioning to wrestling in 1976.
He became a prominent figure in Lucha Libre, earning widespread acclaim for his high-flying moves and masked persona.
After a stellar career, he retired in 2009, leaving a lasting legacy in the wrestling world.
The tragic news follows the recent death of Rey Mysterio’s father, Robert Gutierrez, who passed away at the age of 76.
Rey Mysterio, 50, paid an emotional tribute to his father, stating:
“Father: thank you for giving me the life I have. You did more than set the example of how to love & maintain a strong marriage and father 4 boys, you were the example and passed every single time until your death with flying colours.”
