A violent confrontation broke out in the Gudiri community of Bashar District, located in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in multiple casualties.

The clash occurred on Monday evening, amid ongoing concerns about rising banditry in the region, and just days after the body of a police officer, who had been abducted the previous week, was discovered.

The operation, which saw soldiers and local vigilantes taking decisive action against the bandits, reportedly led to the recovery of over 100 cattle believed to have been rustled by the criminals.

Although the exact casualty figures remain uncertain, it has been confirmed that lives were lost on both sides, with reports indicating that soldiers and bandits were among the dead.

Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, confirmed the loss of life but noted that the exact number of casualties is still unclear. He did, however, acknowledge that several bandits and some soldiers perished in the confrontation.

A member of a local vigilante group provided further details, reporting that three soldiers and more than 15 bandits were killed during the clash.

The operation has been met with approval from the Gudiri community, which has long been affected by the scourge of banditry.

The violence in Wase LGA has been alarming, with previous attacks resulting in significant loss of life.

For instance, a deadly attack on May 21 in the Zurak community claimed over 40 lives and left many more injured.

The community’s frustration with persistent banditry has grown, leading to increased support for military and vigilante efforts to combat these criminal activities.

Despite the ongoing violence, the resilience of the Gudiri community shines through as they continue to stand firm against the threats that have plagued their region.

As the situation develops, the Gudiri community remains resolute in their determination to combat the violence that has disrupted their lives.
