Afrobeats artist Omah Lay has made headlines with his recent comments on the evolution of the genre, claiming that his distinctive style has been widely emulated by fellow musicians.

In an interview with Billboard, the artist asserted that he has pioneered a new sound within Afrobeats, which he believes many of his peers are now mimicking.

Omah Lay stated, “The artists coming out from Nigeria right now, not just Nigeria but Afrobeats in general are taking a bit of my stuff, the stuff I started, everybody tryna copy something.”

His remarks highlight his view that his innovative approach has significantly influenced the genre.

Additionally, the ‘Soso’ singer criticized leading figures in Afrobeats for allegedly diluting the genre in their pursuit of international success.

He expressed concern over the integration of South African music style amapiano into Afrobeats clubs, which he feels undermines the genre’s authenticity.

“I don’t think I am happy with what the pioneers of Afrobeats are doing right now. The front guys are watering it down by just chasing the bags.

“I can’t remember the last time I heard a proper Afrobeats Song. It’s now Amapiano in Afrobeats clubs, not a proper Afrobeats song,” he lamented.

Omah Lay’s comments reflect his frustration with how the genre is evolving and the challenges of maintaining originality amidst growing global influences.
