NDLEA proposes mandatory drug tests for university admissions

Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, the Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kwara State, has suggested that universities should implement mandatory drug tests for newly admitted students as part of their admission process.

She explained that this initiative would serve as a preventive measure, allowing for early intervention and counseling for students who are already using drugs, to prevent them from developing into problematic users.

Hajia Abiola-Popoola made these remarks during a radio program in Ilorin, which was monitored by our correspondent.

The NDLEA chief also expressed concern over the increasing number of drug users in the country, particularly among females, warning that this trend poses significant risks to families and society as a whole.

She said “A 2018 survey shows that 14.3 million people were using drugs in Nigeria. One out of 7 persons in Nigeria is a drug user and one out of 4 drug users is a woman.

“This shows that the society is in trouble because a woman is the administrator of the home.”
