Nigerian Gov’t launches sale of 50kg rice at N40,000, lists requirement for buyers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new intervention to address soaring food prices by offering 30,000 metric tons of rice at a subsidized rate.

This initiative aims to provide a 50kg bag of rice for N40,000, bringing much-needed relief to citizens burdened by rising costs.

During the launch event in Abuja, Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, outlined the program’s structure.

To ensure fair access, beneficiaries must present valid identification, including their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers, to prevent fraudulent claims.

The subsidy plan, announced in July 2024, is set to release 1,000 trucks carrying 30 metric tons of rice each into Nigeria’s food supply chain.

The increased availability is expected to drive down prices. A “one person per bag” policy has also been introduced to prevent misuse and ensure wide-reaching benefits.

Additionally, civil servants can access the subsidized rice through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), with the Ministry of Special Duties overseeing their registration.

This effort is part of a broader government strategy to ease the financial strain on Nigerians.
