Nunez scores as Liverpool outclass Southampton to reach Carabao Cup Semi-Finals
Darwin Nunez ended a six-game goal drought to lead Liverpool to a 2-1 victory over Southampton, securing their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
The match, played under the interim management of Simon Rusk following the sacking of Russell Martin, saw Southampton begin brightly. However, Liverpool’s clinical display soon dampened their hopes.
In the 24th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exceptional play under pressure, aided by a deflection off Jan Bednarek, found Nunez. The Uruguayan capitalized on Alex McCarthy’s slip to slot the ball into the net, giving Liverpool the lead.
Liverpool doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Harvey Elliott, starting for the first time this season, struck a deflected shot into the bottom left corner after being set up by Cody Gakpo.
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Southampton clawed their way back in the second half. Cameron Archer ran nearly the length of the pitch before curling a stunning effort into the far corner past Caoimhin Kelleher, reducing the deficit in the 57th minute.
Southampton’s confidence grew, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis made a crucial clearance to deny Federico Chiesa a third goal for Liverpool. The hosts pushed for an equalizer but failed to capitalize on promising opportunities. A late appeal for a free kick after a challenge on Mateus Fernandes was waved away by referee Simon Hooper.
With this win, Liverpool joins Arsenal and Newcastle in the semi-finals. The final spot will be decided when Tottenham faces Manchester United in the last quarter-final tie on Thursday.
