Background

On December 13, 1963, Nyesom Wike was born to Rev. and Mrs. Nlemanya Wike of Rumueprikom, Obio-Akpor, in the state of Rivers.

After completing his studies at Government Secondary School, Eneka in Obio-akpor, Rivers State, he went on to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT), where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law.

He continued his education in 1997 by enrolling in law school, where he earned a master’s degree in political and administrative studies.

Career

After completing his legal studies, Wike spent a brief period of time working for a private legal firm before entering politics.

Politics

Wike joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 and was named Executive Chairman of the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State.

In 2007, Wike was appointed Chief of Staff to Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State.

President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him as the Minister of State for Education in July 2011, and in September 2013 he was elevated to the position of Federal Minister of Education.

He decided to run for governor of Rivers State in the 2015 gubernatorial elections on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after resigning as Federal Minister for Education in 2014.

Together with his running mate, Ipalibo Banigo, he emerged victorious in the party’s primary and was named the party’s flag bearer.

Wike was proclaimed the victor of the Rivers State gubernatorial election in 2015; however, the court declared his victory invalid due to accusations of electoral fraud made by his opponent, Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The court also mandated a re-run of the election within ninety days.

As Rivers State’s governor, Wike was re-elected in 2016 and again in 2018, but this time he chose a different route.

Upon his victory in 2019, he took office as Rivers State’s governor for the second time, serving until 2023.

Achievements

During his stay as Governor of Rivers State, he registered Rivers State citizens to take the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam and announced free secondary education in keeping with his plans for educational reformation.

During a meeting held at the government house in Port Harcourt on Monday, June 24, 2019, he revealed this.

Alongside this, there were grievances and expressions of gratitude from parents as well as former state headmasters and principals.

But despite their constant silence, the Wike administration persisted until it was all overthrown.

In 2019, Wike announced free registration for state residents to take part in the yearly JAMB exam through the State Ministry of Education.

He put a bill strengthening women’s inheritance rights into effect in 2022.

He urged women to take ownership of their rights and said they should not be scared to do so because it is their legal right after signing the bill.

He started work on three significant flyovers in Port Harcourt at the same time during his second term as governor.

The flyovers are situated at the Artillery, Rumoukoro, and Garrison.
