Obidient Movement threatens nationwide protests over detention of Dele Farotimi

The Obidient Movement has issued a stern warning of nationwide protests if human rights lawyer and activist Barr. Dele Farotimi is not released from detention.

Farotimi was recently arrested following a magistrate court’s order over allegations of defaming Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the movement condemned the arrest, describing it as an abuse of power aimed at silencing dissent.

“We unequivocally condemn this nefarious act of abuse of power and demand that the Nigerian Police respect Dele Farotimi’s fundamental human rights as enshrined in Section 40 of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution,” the statement read.

Calls for Immediate Release and Protest Threats

The group demanded Farotimi’s immediate release and warned that failure to comply would trigger mass protests. They also called on the international community to take note of what they termed a crackdown on free speech and human rights in Nigeria.

Economic and Political Concerns

The Obidient Movement also criticized the government’s economic policies, highlighting:

Fuel Price Hike: An increase from ₦165 to over ₦1,100 per liter, causing inflation.

Naira Devaluation: A significant fall in the value of the naira, now trading at over ₦1,000 per dollar.

Electricity Tariffs: Higher rates without improved service delivery.

Economic Hardships: Rising interest rates, business struggles, and a failing health sector.

Allegations of Political Targeting

The group expressed concerns about a perceived crackdown on opposition figures, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that he could also face arrest.

They reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for justice, human rights, and good governance, emphasizing the need to resist any form of oppression.
