Over 15 dead as community clashes with new terrorist group, Lakurawa, in Kebbi

A violent confrontation between locals from Mera community and members of a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, left over 15 people dead on Friday in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Reports from BBC Hausa, as monitored by Vanguard, revealed that the conflict occurred near Mera community when Lakurawa members, who are believed to have ties to ISIS operating in the Sahel region, attempted to rustle a local herder’s animals.

The altercation escalated into a deadly clash, marking a troubling rise in insecurity in the area.

How it started

“The herder ran to the community and raised alarm, and community members marched to the location where they engaged the terrorists in a fight whiçh led to the killing of 15, while many were injured.

“The locals succeeded in killing some of the terrorists, and injured others.

“But the survivors among the terrorists carried their casualties and left.

“The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State has paid a condolence visit on the people of Mera, and was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Argungu,” the eyewitness said.

A media aide to the Governor of Kebbi State, Abdullahi Idris Zuru, on Saturday, confirmed on phone of the existence of the terror group in some parts of the state.

He assured that the authorities were containing the threat posed by the Lakurawa.
