Peru star striker, Paolo Guerrero announces retirement from international football
Peru’s legendary striker, Paolo Guerrero, announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday at the age of 41.
Speaking to reporters, Guerrero emphasized the need for fresh talent in the national team. “The national team needs new people, new faces. What people are asking for are new players, so let’s give the youngsters a chance,” he said.
Guerrero made his debut for the Peruvian national team in October 2004 against Bolivia.
Over a remarkable two-decade career, he became Peru’s all-time leading scorer, netting 40 goals in 125 appearances.
The former Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Corinthians striker’s final game for Peru was the 1-0 loss to Argentina in November in World Cup qualifying.
Guerrero, who currently plays for Alianza Lima in his homeland, participated at six Copa America tournaments as well as the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
His contributions have left an indelible mark on Peruvian football, inspiring a new generation of players to follow in his footsteps.
