PL: Chelsea’s title hopes fade after 2-0 loss to Ipswich
Ipswich Town secured their first home victory of the Premier League season with a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea, thanks to an exceptional performance by Liam Delap.
The 21-year-old striker was instrumental in the victory, opening the scoring with a coolly taken 12th-minute penalty.
VAR awarded the spot kick after determining Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had fouled Delap while attempting to deny him a clear scoring opportunity.
Delap’s impact didn’t stop there. Early in the second half, he capitalized on a misjudged back pass from Axel Disasi, intercepting the ball and setting up Omari Hutchinson, who calmly slotted home to double Ipswich’s lead.
The result marked a significant boost for Ipswich while delivering a major setback to Chelsea’s title aspirations, with the Blues failing to find a way past Ipswich’s resolute defense.
Hutchinson, a former Chelsea winger, capitalized brilliantly on the opportunity.
Despite dominating possession, Chelsea struggled to convert their chances and saw a Joao Felix equalizer ruled out by VAR following a lengthy offside review.
The defeat compounds Chelsea’s woes, marking back-to-back losses after their recent goalless draw at Everton ended an eight-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.
Ipswich’s crucial win lifts them out of the relegation zone, moving above Leicester City into 18th place and within a point of Wolves.
Meanwhile, Blues’ title aspirations appear increasingly tenuous, as they now trail league leaders Liverpool by 10 points, with the Reds holding a game in hand under manager Arne Slot’s leadership.
