Liverpool capped off their final home game of 2024 with a hard-fought victory, keeping their Premier League title hopes alive.

The 2-0 win over Leicester City at Anfield leaves Arne Slot’s side three points clear at the top, following Chelsea’s slip-up against Fulham.

Although Liverpool were not at their fluent best, a carnival atmosphere erupted in the closing stages as Mohamed Salah netted his 16th Premier League goal of the season. Fans celebrated by twirling scarves and chanting, “Liverpool, Liverpool, top of the league.”

The Reds remain unbeaten in 22 matches across all competitions, a streak that has put them in pole position for their first league title in five years.

With a commanding presence in the Champions League and a League Cup semi-final against Tottenham on the horizon, Slot’s debut season in charge is shaping up to be extraordinary.

Despite the win, Slot acknowledged the long road ahead, stating, “There is still much work to do, but we’re pleased with our current form.”

Leicester City’s Struggles Continue

Leicester City, on the other hand, find themselves in the Premier League relegation zone for the first time this season after a third consecutive defeat.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side put up a spirited fight, frustrating Liverpool in the first half and coming close to equalizing when Patson Daka missed a crucial chance.

The Foxes’ Premier League return has been turbulent since winning promotion under Enzo Maresca, whose departure to Chelsea destabilized the team.

Steve Cooper’s short-lived tenure saw Leicester pick up just a handful of points before being replaced by Van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman’s five games in charge have yielded only four points, leaving Leicester with a daunting challenge ahead.

However, their fate may rest on winnable fixtures, including a crucial clash against Crystal Palace on January 15.

With Manchester City next on their schedule, Leicester must find form quickly to avoid a return to the Championship.
