Police confirms Benue boat mishap as over 20 dies
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the tragic loss of 20 lives in a boat mishap on River Benue in Agatu Local Government Area, while 11 individuals were rescued.
The accident occurred on Saturday night when a wooden canoe transporting traders to Odenyi in Nasarawa State capsized after colliding with a submerged tree.
The victims had just concluded trading at the Ocholonya market in Agatu LGA and embarked on the journey around 8 p.m.
Reports suggest the canoe was overloaded, and passengers disregarded warnings to disembark despite the risks, eager to return home.
This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about safety practices in river transportation.
Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, confirmed the tragedy, stating that 20 bodies had been recovered from the river.
She also noted that rescue operations are still ongoing, with 11 people having been rescued alive.
