Premier League: Amorim confirms Maguire stay, Amad set to renew contract
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed the club’s decision to trigger a one-year extension for defender Harry Maguire, ensuring his stay at Old Trafford until at least June 2025.
Additionally, talks are progressing well for a new long-term deal for winger Amad Diallo.
Maguire, 31, had been rumored to leave the club after losing his captaincy and facing reduced playing time under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.
However, Amorim expressed the importance of retaining Maguire’s experience and leadership.
“For Harry Maguire, we are going to trigger our option. I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch; we need him a lot,” Amorim stated. He further emphasized, “When you look at our team, we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, but he has to improve that part and his game. We are happy to continue.”
Meanwhile, discussions with 22-year-old Amad Diallo, whose current contract also expires in June 2024, are nearing completion.
The Ivorian winger has been a standout performer this season, with his decisive goal in the Manchester derby highlighting his potential.
Amorim expressed confidence in finalizing the deal, signaling a bright future for the young talent.
Manchester United face Liverpool this Sunday in a crucial Premier League clash, with both Maguire and Amad expected to play pivotal roles in the remainder of the season.
“Amad’s deal is near,” Amorim confirmed, highlighting the importance of the player to his plans.
In a related update, Amorim ruled out Marcus Rashford for the trip to Anfield due to illness.
The forward had been absent from several recent matchday squads before appearing as a substitute in Monday’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.
