Senate forms committee to address controversies surrounding tax reform bills

The Nigerian Senate has established a committee led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) to review contentious aspects of four proposed tax reform bills.

The committee’s mandate is to consult with key stakeholders, including the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the executive arm, before a public hearing.

Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, emphasized the need for thorough consultations due to widespread concerns over the bills. Nigerians, including governors, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and some lawmakers, have expressed opposition to the reforms.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had initially submitted the bills to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, aiming to strengthen fiscal institutions and align with his administration’s development goals. Despite these intentions, the proposals have sparked significant debate.

Other members of the committee include Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North). The committee’s findings will be presented to the Senate before the bills proceed to the public hearing stage.
