Telecom tariffs to increase, but not by 100% – FG

Nigerians should brace for a hike in telecom tariffs, though it won’t be the 100% increase initially sought by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

This assurance was given by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dr. Tijani explained that the government is working to balance the interests of consumers and telecom operators, ensuring affordability while enabling operators to remain sustainable and invest in infrastructure.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is currently reviewing the tariff adjustment proposal, with an official announcement expected soon.

Sources suggest the tariff increase could hover around 40%. If approved, call charges could rise from ₦11 to ₦15.40 per minute, SMS costs may increase from ₦4 to ₦5.60, and 1GB of data could be priced at ₦1,400 or more.

The telecom sector has faced financial pressures in recent years, with major players such as MTN Nigeria and Airtel reporting significant losses in 2023 and 2024. The proposed increase aims to stabilize the industry and foster further investment.

Dr. Tijani reiterated that the government is engaging stakeholders to finalize acceptable rates, emphasizing that the NCC would soon issue a directive on the matter.

“What will be approved will not be by 100%,” the minister assured, highlighting the administration’s commitment to protecting consumers while supporting the telecom sector.
