Three gunmen, two Police officers killed as IPOB engage in gun battle with Police
A recent operation by the police has led to the neutralization of three kidnapping suspects and the arrest of two others after an exchange of gunfire.
According to a police source, the suspects opened fire on the operatives during the encounter, which resulted in the fatalities.
The arrested suspects were identified as 20-year-old David Ifeanyichukwu and 24-year-old Abuchi Joseph, confirmed by Police Spokesman Henry Okoye.
Okoye disclosed that the group was responsible for the abduction of Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others on November 12, 2024.
During the incident, the criminals also made away with a Mercedes Benz and other valuables. The police are continuing their investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The police operation, which took place on December 19, 2024, in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area, followed extensive investigation and intelligence gathering,” he said.
He said : “During the confrontation, the operatives recovered six AK-47 rifles, 131 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made gun, and two stolen vehicles.
“Unfortunately, two police officers sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and later succumbed to their injuries. The Imo State Police Command mourns their loss and commends their dedication in the line of duty.
He said efforts are now focused on capturing the other members of the syndicate who managed to escape during the operation.
He said that the State Police Command was intensifying patrols and security operations in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free yuletide.
